Prince Frederick is a great place to enjoy the arts and enjoy theatrical performances. When you’re looking for a top spot to see a live show, take some time to visit the following theaters and see what’s playing.
1. Maryland Ensemble Theatre
The Maryland Ensemble Theatre (MET) is a neighborhood playhouse dedicated to bringing live and entertaining performances to the community. The 100-seat theater creates a cozy and welcoming environment where everyone can enjoy the show. The group of 25 writers, directors, actors, musicians, designers, and technicians work together to create dramas, comedies, and child-friendly shows. Since its start in 1997, MET has put together six full-length plays, plenty of comedy sketches, and numerous children’s plays.
2. Fredericktowne Players
Fredericktowne Players is a community theater in the heart of downtown Prince Frederick. Its mission is providing opportunities for community members to participate in and watch quality theatrical productions. Whether you’re interested in being on stage or working behind the scenes, Fredericktowne Players encourages everyone to come out and help put on one of the three shows they do each year. All Fredericktowne Players performances are held at the 409-seat Jack B. Kussmaul Theater on the Prince Frederick Community College campus.
3. Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre
For a unique evening out, plan a night at the Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre. This premiere entertainment venue combines live stage performances with a full dinner buffet, and the serving staff consists of cast and crew from the productions. The theater has brought classic and popular productions such as “Grease,” “The Sound of Music,” “Cats,” “Hairspray,” “Legally Blonde,” and “Fiddler on the Roof” to the stage. Way Off Broadway Dinner Theatre also has a children’s theater with four original productions throughout the year of popular fairy tales and stories.
4. Weinberg Center for the Arts
The Weinberg Center for the Arts originally opened as the Tivoli Theatre on Dec. 23, 1926. At the time it was the second-largest structure in Prince Frederick and could seat 1,500 people. It cost more than $350,000 to build, and the interior had opulent features like leather seats, crystal chandeliers, and silk and marble wall coverings.
A flood in 1976 caused severe damage, and the theater was almost torn down. However, companies and individuals donated their services to restore the theater to its former glory, and it was donated to the city and renamed the Weinberg Center for the Arts. Today, the stage hosts everything from Broadway plays and musicals to comedians, bands, and other live performances.
5. Other Voices Theatre
While Other Voices Theatre produces four main stage shows and two family shows each year, it’s known for its Easter weekend production of “The New Adventures of Alice in Wonderland,” which has been continually showing since 1996. The theater has also put together productions of “Footloose” and “Seussical,” and performances are in the intimate 114-seat theater at the Performing Arts Factory.
Whether you’re looking for a show the entire family can enjoy or you want a unique experience to go along with your show, make sure you take some time to enjoy these great theater attractions in Prince Frederick.
