There is nothing better than hitting the beach and enjoying the water and great outdoors. Chesapeake Bay has loads of great beaches for everyone: those who want peace and quiet, and the fun-loving crowd as well. Below you will find a list of the top beaches in Chesapeake Bay for you to enjoy, not only on sunny days, but on hot nights too.
1. Chippokes Plantation State Park
This beach offers more than your regular sandy shore. The plantation has been established here for four centuries, and you can look at the historical farm equipment used generations ago. Just off the Cobham Bay, this beach is easy access from Route 665, and has annual shows and events, such as the Christmas Craft festival and the summer Steam and Gas Engine Show. You will also find a campground if you have an RV or are taking your tents with you to get closer to nature. Take a walk on the beach or take a trip down to the Jamestown Ferry. 2. Betterton Beach
The beach has a 5-acre water park for families visiting the area of Betterton. Facilities include public restrooms, bath houses, and the shore stretches along 700 feet. Close to the Sassafras River, there are loads of trails to follow when you’ve had enough fun in the water. Have a snack at the picnic pavilion, or take a boat out to the sea. Fishing facilities near the river opening are also available. The water is less salty here, due to the freshwater currents.
3. Bay Front Park
Want something more than sand and water? Head over to Bay Front Park, to walk along the cliffs, enjoy nature, and unwind. The parking lot is only a short walk to the beach. Visit at low tide and let the kids hunt for fossils and shells in the shallow water. There is an entrance fee at high season; inquire before you arrive to avoid disappointment. The best time to visit is before Memorial Day and after Labor Day.
4. Breezy Point Beach and Campground
This small and quiet beach is a hidden gem in Chesapeake Bay. In Southern Maryland, just South of Chesapeake Beach, you will find a half-mile of sandy beach with fishing piers and picnic areas. Kids can have fun at the playground, while grown-ups prepare food on the grills by the shore. Hunt together for fossilized shark teeth, or dive into the sea in warm weather. The beach is surrounded by nets to deter jellyfish from entering the swimming area.
5. Ocean View Beach Park
This beach has a fishing pier for those who are looking for catching more than the sun, and 70 parking spaces in the lot. You will also find picnic tables and showers. The beach also features the TGOV Beach Music Concert Series, and regular children’s activities.
